More Snowies!!

So, a fortuitous day without child care!! While our friends that operate our kids’ dayhome are in Florida, I got a bonus day off to go look for Snowy Owls in the prairie of Southern Alberta… Leah of Altitude Art and my youngest son Drew were my travel companions as we toiled the back roads east of Calgary in search of owls that haven’t left for their northern breeding grounds yet… We managed to find 3 through the course of the late morning and early afternoon. 2 were fairly cooperative, and the other, an immature male, wanted nothing to do with us no matter how slowly we approached or how far away we stopped. The really sad thing is that eventually he perched atop a fence post with an absolutely gorgeous yellow and white backdrop, with absolutely NO way for us to even think about getting close… We managed a few obligatory telepost portraits in nice light – actually too bright, as the owls were typically squinting – before finding another cooperative subject. After watching him for a while, he also decided he had had enough of our company and made a break for it, but took a nice path past us as he left.

This is one of a sequence of several images of which there are about 3 “useable” shots – I’ll take that!

Not a bad way to spend a day off! Another day at the end of the week coming up – I may have to get back out to see if I can track down any more of these guys before they depart on a somewhat more permanent basis.
